Panama Highlights Day 1: Panama City Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Panama City. Welcome to Panama! Day 2: Panama City and Canal Tour (B) The visit starts with Panama Viejo, first Spanish settlement, founded in 1519 and destroyed in 1671 during the attack of the infamous pirate Henry Morgan. It was in fact the Spanish governor who set fire to the city to avoid it falling in the hands of the privateers. The city was rebuilt some years later on the foothills of Cerro Ancon. This beautiful little area has several attractions that you shouldn't miss and can easily cover in a short walk. A monument to the French entrepreneurs who began the Panama Canal stands at the bayside end of the Casco Viejo. After lunch (not included) a short transfer through the modern part of the city will take us to Miraflores locks. Ships must pass those imposing water elevators to navigate in and out the Panama Canal and it is a fascinating and unforgettable show to watch the steel giants going through the locks, where the biggest of them, called "Panamax", only have 2 feet between their hull and the side of the chambers!
